Khartoum-UN Humanitarian Aid Chief, Valerie Amos, revealed on Thursday that the fighting in Darfur region has forced about (300,000) persons to flee their homes so far this year.

"The United Nations estimates that 300,000 people have fled fighting in all of Darfur in the first five months of this year, which is more than the total number of people displaced in the last two years put together," Amos said.

Speaking to reporters at the end of her three-day visit to Sudan, Amos expressed her worrying about situation, pointing out that the humanitarian aid agencies are struggling to cope.

"We cannot let Darfur slip off the radar screen of the international community. With 1.4 million people still living in camps, and a majority of the people in Darfur still suffering from inadequate access to basic health-care, education and other services, the challenges remain enormous." She added.

Conflict has raged in Darfur, a vast arid region, since 2003 when mainly non-Arab tribes took up arms against the Arab government in Khartoum, accusing it of political and economic marginalization.
