Adam Ibrahim Al-Nur of Darfur has been kept in Kober Prison, Khartoum, awaiting execution.  Among many, Al-Nur was sentenced to death at a kangaroo court following JEM invasion of the Sudanese capital in 2008. The trial was further discredited by Al-Nur’s psychiatric condition.  He suffers severe depression and despite appeals of Darfur activists, Al-Nur has been denied mediation since his arrest.

In the past few weeks, Al-Nur became visibly malnourished and his depression intensified.  A week ago, he collapsed in his cell and was taken away on a stretcher to an unknown destination.   Friends of Al-Nur could not locate him in any hospital and are worried about his safety.

Al-Nur is a prisoner of war (POW) and it is against international rules put him on trial or sentence him to death in the first place.  Secondly, Al-Nur is covered by a presidential amnesty following Good Will Agreement signed by Khartoum and JEM, February 2009.  The agreement stipulated release of POWs held by both parties.  JEM released all its POWs but Khartoum failed to comply with the Agreement.

We appeal to all Human Rights and other relevant international organisations to act fast and ensure safety of Mr Al-Nur.  Time is running out for him and immediate intervention is necessary.

JEM holds GoS responsible for whatever happens to POW Adam Ibrahim Al-Nur.
